What Is An Art Portfolio Course?

This is a portfolio preparation and general art course for students who wish to gain entry to a third level art college in Ireland or abroad. The emphasis will be placed on the preparation of a balanced portfolio as well as developing skills in the art, craft and design areas. The portfolio, showing the students individual sense of design and pattern, can use a wide variety of the modules covered on the course as well as the students own interpretation of colour and design. Depending on the combination of modules a student can achieve a qualification in Art or Art, Craft and Design.

• Communications

• Painting

• Work Experience

• Sculpture

• Word Processing

• Design Skills

• Embroidery

• Combined materials

Certification: QQI Level 5 in Art 5M1985.

Career Opportunities

Graduates may pursue an art diploma or degree in NCAD, DIT, IADT, Athlone IT, IT Carlow, UCC, Cork IT, Dun Laoghaire, Marino Institute of Education, DIT, Galway Mayo Institute, Limerick IT, Letterkenny IT, Marino College, St. Angela’s College Sligo, Sligo IT.

They can also access level 7 courses in other areas in many of the IT colleges around the country. Alternatively,a graduate may seek immediate employment in a range of art, design, animation, craft or community arts type projects. Many students progress to QQI Level 6, or Higher National Diploma and Degree programmes in Graphic Design, Interior Design, Fashion Design and so on.

NCAD: AD202 Design or Fine Art and Education (Level 8, 3-4 Years)

Entry Requirements:

  • Leaving Cert
  • LCA
  • Mature Students of all backgrounds
  • Other equivalent qualification
  • All applicants will be interviewed regardless of previous qualifications
  • Small selection of applicants’ artwork and sketchbooks to show at interview. Please note that unfinished artwork is perfectly acceptable.
